Henrico, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Most of the local police agencies are partnering up with local Midas shops to work to combat catalytic converter thefts. Converters can be stolen in a manner of minutes, and are valuable for the precious metals contained in them. Thefts have increased exponentially in the past few years.
The Midas stores will mark the converters for free on three days: November 13th, December 11th, and January 8th. You must register ahead of time. The hope is the markings will make the converters less valuable for thieves to get money off of, and that they'll move to other targets.
Replacing and fixing converters can cost in the thousands.
