Henrico County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Henrico Fire Marshal has issued a summons to a man for causing the 75-acre brush fire in Varina on Monday afternoon.
The blaze lasted for about an hour and damaged fences, trees, a shed, and a garage. The Fire Marshal’s office investigated and found that the fire originated from a single-family home on New Market Road where a man was burning paper products in a burn barrel without a permit.
He attempted to put out the fire, but it spread quickly due to the ongoing dry spell across Virginia.
The fire was ruled accidental. The man charged was issued a summons and released. His court date has not been scheduled yet.
“Henrico Fire urges anyone that sees a brush fire to call 911 immediately so we can send appropriate resources as soon as possible. As seen in this instance, it only takes seconds for a small ember or ash to ignite dry vegetation or brush and spread very quickly,” officials said.
