Man Killed; Amelia Deputy Injured in Shootout

AMELIA, Va. – An Amelia County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot Wednesday night while attempting to serve warrants on a wanted subject. The Sheriff’s Deputy was flown from the scene by Virginia State Police Med-Flight helicopter to Chippenham Hospital for treatment of a serious, but non-life threatening, injury.

At approximately 6:08 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 28, 2022), the Amelia County Sheriff’s Deputy was called to a residence in the 13500 block of West Lane to conduct a welfare check on a male subject. Following up on the information provided in the 911 call, the deputy confirmed the male was also wanted on a felony arrest warrant and two misdemeanor warrants. Two Virginia State Police troopers responded to assist the Sheriff’s Deputy. As the Deputy and troopers made entry into the residence, they encountered the wanted subject. Shots were exchanged between the wanted subject and the Deputy and trooper. Both the deputy and wanted subject were shot.

The male subject succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His remains will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.

There were other individuals at the residence at the time of the shooting. None were injured. Neither trooper was injured during the shooting.
