Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Dr. Gonzolo Bearman, head of infectious diseases at VCU Health, says the newest omicron subvariant of Covid-19 is headed to be the dominant variant in Virginia, if it isn't already. Bearman says the subvariant is highly transmissible, but his sense is that it not more severe.

Bearman says the good news is the new bivalent vaccines work well against the subvariant, decreasing the risk of severe disease by up to 80%. He also says the drugs used to fight Covid-19 remain effective.

Bearman says the advice remains the same: vaccinate, wash hands, and masking. He says no one is recommending universal masking, but it makes sense based on a person's individual circumstances.
