Petersburg, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The casino referendum received overwhelming support from Petersburg voters last night.
The ballot measure seeking to permit the construction of the $1.4 billion casino passed with nearly 82% of the vote with seven of seven precincts reporting, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).
Officials with the Cordish Company, which is behind the project, estimate that the casino will generate a $2.8 billion economic boost to the region over the first 10 years and create job opportunities.
The decision, which came after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, comes after voters in Richmond twice rejected a casino project on the city’s southside.
Officials say the zoning process to get construction rolling on the Live! Gaming & Entertainment District will kick off as soon as possible. It’s set to be located on a 92.5-acre site off Interstate 95 at Wagner Road along Brasfield Parkway.
Groundbreaking is expected in the first quarter of 2025.
Nearly 82% of voters approved the ballot measure
