Potential Traffic Delays on 95 South This Weekend

Pipe Replacement Will Shut Down Two Lanes South of Arthur Ashe Boulevard

Richmond, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - Drivers should plan ahead for alternating double lane closures on I-95 south near mile marker 77 (near the Lombardy Street Overpass about a mile from the Arthur Ashe Boulevard exit). The closures begin Friday night at 11 and last through midnight Monday (Sunday night into Monday).

VDOT spokesman Kyle Gibson says that the repairs are required to replace a corrugated metal pipe that has collapsed under the interstate after many years of service. That metal pipe will be replaced with a concrete pipe, which is designed to withstand traffic, wear and tear for an even longer period of time. The replacement will also help relieve recent flooding in the vicinity that occurs after heavy rainfall.

Signs will be in place alerting traffic and suggesting alternate routes. Drivers should expect heavy congestion and delays during the closures and use alternate routes, such as I-295 and Route 288 to reach destinations south of Richmond and Brook Road/Chamberlayne Road for local destinations.
