Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The American Red Cross says it's seen a noticeable slowdown in the number of appointments made to donate blood over the past couple of weeks.

High schools and colleges -- which are a significant source of donations for the Red Cross -- are out for the summer, and it's been a particularly busy travel season. The Red Cross says these factors have had a "ripple effect" on the blood supply at a time when there's a spike in need due to traumas that happen over the summer.

"All blood types are needed when we see this type of slowdown," says Jonathan McNamara, American Red Cross spokesperson. "If you're somebody who can't donate blood for any reason because of eligibility, we also encourage you to think about volunteering."

To make an appointment to donate blood, visit Redcrossblood.org and enter your zip code. The site has eligibility requirements, as well as closest locations to donate.
