Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The commission charged with drawing new maps for the State Senate and House of Delegates has until October 10th to complete their work, and it is growing increasingly likely that they do not accomplish that. If they do not get maps drawn, then the Supreme Court of Virginia will get to draw them.
Some Democrats are concerned if the court gets control, they will be in trouble because most of the court was appointed by Republicans. Democrats just recently took control of the General Assembly in 2017.
This is the first time a commission has handled redistricting. Usually, lawmakers have drawn the maps. The 2011 House of Delegates maps was tossed by the courts for putting too many minorities in too few districts.
The deadline for the Congressional maps is later this month.
