Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Richmond Police Department is warning people of a phone scam pretending to be a police officer.
In a social media post, the Department said scammers are contacting individuals using the name of an RPD sergeant to demand money through cash apps to resolve outstanding warrants.
“These are attempts to swindle! DO NOT SEND FUNDS in response to these scams,” RPD said.
The warning comes after a Richmond healthcare worker was scammed out of thousands of dollars after receiving a phone call where two people pretended to be Richmond Police third precinct officers.
The Richmond Police Department says it would never call to collect fees, fines or payments ordered by a court. The Department is asking individuals who may receive these phone calls to not send any money in response as they are scams.
