Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- The suspect, according to acting police Chief Rick Edwards, is 19-year-old Amari Pollard.

Police say he was there to attend the graduation, but exchanged words outside with 18-year-old Shawn Jackson. The two had been known to each other for sometime. From there, RPD says, Pollard retrieved a handgun from his car and returned to open fire. This was a targeted attack -- while it was a mass shooting (any shooting where 4 or more people are injured is qualified as such), Edwards said this was not an "active shooter" situation.

After the shooting, Pollard fled on foot, but was quickly apprehended by VCU security, where he surrendered and began cooperating with police. No officers were injured and no service weapons were discharged.

Though there may have been longstanding animosity between the two teenagers, Edwards says this appears to have been a personal disagreement. There is no current evidence to support that either of them were gang affiliated, and Edwards said that pollard had never been arrested prior to this incident.
