Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - This weekend, Virginians can stock up on certain essentials without paying sales tax. Virginia's Sales Tax Holiday Weekend will run from Friday at 12:01 a.m. to Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
During this time, the following items can be purchased without sales tax:
• Qualified school supplies ($20 or less per item);
• Qualified clothing and footwear ($100 or less per item);
• Hurricane and emergency preparedness products:
• Portable generators ($1,000 or less per item);
• Gas-powered chainsaws ($350 or less per item);
• Chainsaw accessories ($60 or less per item);
• Other specified hurricane preparedness products ($60 or less per item);
• Qualifying ENERGY STAR™ or WaterSense™ products purchased for non-commercial home or personal use ($2,500 or less per item).
Virginia's Sales Tax Holiday typically happens the first weekend in August, but it didn't happen this year after state lawmakers and the governor forgot to propose anything on continuing the practice during a General Assembly session. Under the latest budget agreement, the Sales Tax Holiday will return to August next year.
