Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Senator Lionel Spruill (D-Chesapeake) says he has a meeting scheduled with Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) for Wednesday morning to discuss voting rights restoration. The Governor's Office has not confirmed the meeting. It was Spruill's letter to the Governor about voting rights restoration that lead to wide spread revelation that the Youngkin Administration had made the process less automatic.
Virginia had a somewhat automatic process for voting rights restoration starting during the McDonnell Administration. The Youngkin Administration maintains their changes are constitutional, and say the Governor believes in second chances. They also say that everyone receives an application upon release from prison.
Virginia and Kentucky are the only two states that permanently remove voting rights upon a felony conviction. The General Assembly returns to Richmond for one day on Wednesday to look at the Governor's vetoes and amendments.
