Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Richmond SPCA on Tuesday welcomed a transport of 50 dogs and 90 cats evacuated from North Carolina in the aftermath of Helene.
The effects of Helene caused North Carolina shelters to become overcrowded. According to the Richmond SPCA, most of the animals evacuated were from the Yancey County Humane Society — a county close to Asheville.
The SPCA says not all of the over 100 animals displaced will remain under its care. Some will be accepted by other Virginia animal-care partners.
Animals staying at the SPCA are expected to be ready for adoption within ten days, after they’ve received medical evaluation and treatment.
Anyone interested in helping animals displaced by Helene can do so by donating supplies. The SPCA says the following items are needed:
• Cat carriers
• Light blankets
• Bath towels
• Nonperishable human food
• Small bags of cat and dog food
• Jugs of water
