Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond is expanding its speed camera program as part of a larger push to reduce speeding and increase safety around local schools.
The city has seen a sharp increase in citations this year, and officials subsequently made the decision to extend the program to additional school zones.
Previously, speed cameras were installed at just two Richmond public schools (Linwood Holton Elementary and Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts). Now, nine additional schools will have speed cameras.
They will be installed and operational before school starts next week at the following schools:
• Boushall Middle School
• Swansboro Middle School
• Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School
• Lucille Brown Middle School
• Westover Hills Elementary School
• Huguenot High School
• Frances W. McClenney Elementary School
• River City Middle School
• Mary Munford Elementary School
The cameras are strategically placed in "high-injury network areas" -- areas identified as having a high rate of traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Any driver who goes over 11 mph over the speed limit will face a $50 ticket. Repeat offenders will be forced to pay $100.
