Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - At a flu vaccine event Tuesday morning, Mayor Levar Stoney and state health leaders discussed the importance of receiving an annual influenza immunization.

Flu symptoms vary from person to person, but for those with underlying health conditions, getting the flu can be fatal. With colder weather approaching, State Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Shelton now is the ideal time to get a flu shot.

"September and October are the best times to get a flu shot," Dr. Shelton says. "We encourage everyone six months and older to get a flu shot by the end of October. That gives the vaccine time to reach its full effect before we reach the peak of flu season, which usually starts in November."

Dr. Shelton and others in attendance received their flu vaccine at the event. Mayor Stoney said he received his shot over the weekend but encouraged all Richmond-area residents to get their flu shot as soon as possible.

"Now is the perfect time to roll up your sleeve, especially as the colder months approach and people start spending more time indoors," Stoney said.

Flu shots are available at pharmacies, primary care providers, and urgent care clinics. If you need help finding a location at which to get a flu vaccine, visit Vaccines.gov and type in your zip code.
