Winterpock, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The State Mines Department says it is consulting with federal agencies to come up with a plan to deal with a smoldering pile of coal waste in western Chesterfield County. Western Chesterfield used to have a number of coal mines, some of which were the first in the country.
This coal pile is smoldering in the Winterpock area of the county. Mines will not say exactly where because they do not want people to go to the site and put themselves at risk. The waste likely dates to the 1880s.
The fire has lead to some strange smells in western Chesterfield.
