Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The trial for the 18-year-old charged in the shooting last year in the parking lot at the former George Wythe High School is getting underway Monday.

David Gutierrez, who was a student at the high school, faces five charges including malicious wounding, malicious assault, and possession of a firearm on school property.

Two students were wounded in the shooting. Gutierrez was captured and arrested two days after the shooting with help from the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Richmond Public School leaders responded to the incident with public comment, “The amount of gun violence in the city has just got to stop,” Jason Kamras, Richmond Schools Superintendent, said. “There are too many guns in the city, and they’re being used too often.”

A four-day trial is set to begin Monday, Feb. 12 at 9:30 a.m. at Richmond City Circuit Court.
