Newport News, Va. (Newwsradiowrva.com) -- Newport News Police say two students have gunshot wounds, and the shooter is now in custody, in a shooting that occurred during the school day at Heritage High School. Police Chief Steve Drew (who is a former Richmond officer) says other kids were also taken to the hospital, possibly with injuries that occurred during the evacuation.

Drew says they are now searching the school. Students were evacuated to the tennis courts, where they were either reunited with their parents or transported home. State Police and the FBI are also helping with the situation.

The Newport News Superintendent says Heritage may move to a virtual set-up for the next few days as this situation is dealt with. Drew says they do believe the shooter and victims knew each other.
