Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Former Del. Jay Jones won Tuesday’s Democratic state primary for attorney general. Jones will face Republican Attorney General incumbent Jason Miyares in the November general election.
“I am ready for this fight and to win this November,” Jones said in a victory statement.
Democrats are also nominating their pick for lieutenant governor. The race was very close, but State Sen. Ghazala Hashmi led former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and declared victory. Stoney conceded the race Wednesday morning.
Once certified, Hashmi will face former WRVA host and Republican Lieutenant Governor John Reid in November. In a statement, Reid congratulated the Chesterfield State Senator and welcomed her to the campaign trail.
Winsome Earle-Sears became the gubernatorial nominee after Republicans Dave LaRock and Amanda Chase failed to collect enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
Reid became the de facto nominee for lieutenant governor after his primary opponent left the race.
The Department of Elections will post the complete list of candidates the week of June 30.
