Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Virginia State Police (VSP) are reminding everyone to make traffic safety a priority over the extended Labor Day weekend.

State police will be increasing patrols on the roadways this weekend as part of the 22nd annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign. The statewide campaign began Aug. 16, 2023 and will continue through the Labor Day holiday weekend.

If you're planning one last summer trip or just traveling across town, police say it's imperative to buckle up, drive responsibly, and drive sober.

"The Labor Day weekend does traditionally see an uptick in overall traffic violations due to the increase in traffic, but especially with impaired driving arrests," says Corrine Geller, Virginia State Police spokesperson. "During Labor Day weekend of 2022, Virginia State troopers arrested 87 impaired drivers statewide."

Virginians can expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement on the roads this weekend. There will be DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols as part of VSP's push to reduce alcohol-related crashes.

"We're reminding everyone to make this holiday weekend as safe as possible," says Geller. "Enjoy it with your family and friends, but if you're going to be driving home after having a few drinks, make sure you stop and get a designated driver or use Uber or get a taxi or use public transportation."
