Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Senator Mark Warner (D) made the trip to the Diamond Thursday afternoon to pitch for Covid relief funds for Minor Leagure Baseball. Minor League teams did not play in 2020, and have had capacity limits for portions of the 2021 season.
Richmond Flying Squirrels COO Todd Parney says they lost between 90 to 95% of revenues last year. He says events they held in 2020 were "pennies on the dollar" compared to what they normally make. He says the team will survive, but other minor league teams may not be so lucky.
Warner wants to use $550 million in unused Covid funds for baseball. Parney says getting the bill passed will help him sleep at night. Warner says it has bi-partisan support, but will likely have to be attached to another bill to get through.
