Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com)- Meteorologists are tracking a powerful winter storm that will likely affect our area Sunday evening through Monday.

Some Central Virginia residents will get only snow, while others may see a wintry mix. Light snow is expected to begin falling between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday night, though details of the forecast could change due to the fact that the storm system is still roughly 2,000 miles away.

Currently, meteorologists say the snow that is expected to begin Sunday evening will steadily increase in intensity in the hours leading up to midnight.

On Monday, mixed precipitation will likely change to rain. Areas north and northwest of Richmond may see the wintry mix continue through early afternoon.

There will be the potential for some snow accumulation. Much of Central Virginia could see snow and sleet accumulation Sunday night before it changes to rain on Monday.

Our partners at 8News will have updated forecasts throughout the weekend. VDOT says you can visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov for the latest information on the storm.
