Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin, in a sit-down interview with WRVA, said school districts constitutionally have the right to mandate masks after he takes office on Saturday. However, the Republican also says he plans to make clear that parents will be able to opt-out of any such requirements. Youngkin has opposed both mask and vaccine mandates.
Youngkin says he will continue to encourage the vaccines and boosters. He also says he plans to talk more about his Covid strategy in the coming days. Governor Ralph Northam issued a targeted State of Emergency on Monday to help hospital capacity, and Youngkin says he supports the declaration.
Northam recently said he believes state law would continue the current school mask mandate beyond his administration, until the law was changed.
