Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) announced Wednesday that he was pushing legislation to require schools notify students and parents of awards and National Merit Scholarships. The announcement follows a controversy which started with Thomas Jefferson High School in Fairfax, and accusations by Youngkin, Attorney General Jason Miyares (R), and others that the delay was done for equity reasons and to avoid hurting students' feelings.
The controversy has now expanded to other northern Virginia schools. Some Democrats, including State Senator Scott Surrovel (D-Fairfax), have called it a "made-up" controversy. The Fairfax School District says it is investigating, and says it is their understanding the delay is "human error."
Miyares is running a separate investigation as well. Thomas Jefferson High School has recently been a target for Republicans and some groups over changes the school made to admissions in hopes of diversify the magnet school's student body.
