Close the Jail ATL

Supporters stood with Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Monday as she signed legislation aimed at closing the Atlanta City Detention Center.

“It has always been a vision of mine to close the Atlanta city jail. The city detention center is the first step for people to gain records and a background for not committing a crime but for violating a city ordinance…no one should be harshly penalized for that - only receive a citation,” stated Marilynn Winn.

Winn is the executive director of Women on the Rise – a grassroots organization led by formally incarcerated women of color. The group is one of several a part of an alliance to close of the city jail.

Listen as Winn and Devin Barrington-Ward – with advocacy organization Close the Jail ATL – discuss the 25 member task force and future plans to utilize the space.
