From our ‘pov’ Ariana Grande’s Positions has us feeling one type of way… thirsty, moody, and low-key DTF. Last week Ari dropped her sixth studio album on us and reminded listeners in 14 tracks, just how powerful is it is to take control of your sexual desires.
Grande has always flirted with a more sultry side of music on tracks like “Dangerous Woman,” and “Side To Side,” but now on Positions Grande isn’t holding back, or speaking in any innuendoes. Want Ari wants is what Ari gets. As a matter of fact, no sensual moment is “off the table” for the “34+35” singer.
Because cuffing season has arrived, we are highlighting some of the lyrics from Positions that made us feel just a little hotter. So grab your boo and turn up the album that was practically made for getting freaky between the sheets.
shut up
The opening track on the album sets us up to quite literally change “positions.” No longer are we in thank u, next territory. We have now stepped into a new era of Ariana, where the singer is getting exactly what she wants and she’s not apologizing for it. “Guess it f***in' just clicked one night / All them demons helped me see s*** differently / So don't be sad for me” sings Grande. Well ok Ari, we hear you loud and clear.
34+35
This involves a little math, but if we’ve calculated correctly Ariana is down to... well, you know. TBH, in 2020 we can’t afford not to do all the things that make us feel good. Ariana puts things “quite plainly” and lets her mans know exactly what’s she’s into. Yas empowerment, “Baby, you might need a seatbelt when I ride it / I'ma leave it open like a door, come inside it / Even though I'm wifey, you can hit it like a side chick.”
motive
Grande’s collaboration with Doja Cat has us shouting “So tell me, what’s your motive!” Honestly isn’t that what we all want to know when we start getting involved with someone? How many times have you asked, “so, like what are we?” Anyway, our favorite moment from the song is when Doja drops, "You treat me like gold, baby / Now you wanna spoil me / Did you want a trophy or you wanna sport me, baby? / Want me on your neck 'cause you wanted respect.”
just like magic
This moment on the album exudes confidence. Ariana lets us into how she keeps her s*** together while maintaining success… and honestly, it requires a little “magic.” The track, which is a two-minute and thirty-second humble brag. makes us admire Grande’s no-nonsense attitude and her ability to keep it pushin’. “Good karma, my aesthetic (Aesthetic) / Keep my conscience clear, that's why I'm so magnetic / Manifest it (Yeah), I finessed it (I finessed it).”
off the table
The more melancholy song allows us to peer into the insecurity one faces when working out all the details of a new relationship. With The Weeknd assisting with some very smooth vocals, the line that hits us the hardest is when Ariana and The Weeknd sing, “I'll wait for you / Even though it always feels like I'll be number two / To someone you can't hold anymore.”
six thirty
Things are getting serious. “six thirty” feels like it embodies the moment before a couple is figuring out when the right time to say “I love you” is. Ariana continually asks “Are you down?” But she really hammers it home when she sings, “What if I need a friend? Will you ride 'til the end? / Am I enough to keep your love? / When I'm old and stuff, will you still have a crush?”
safety net
We’ve dived deep into the most intricate realms of a relationship now as Ariana collabs with Ty Dolla $ign on “safety net.” With Ariana’s prior dating experiences it only makes sense that she sings, “I've never been this scared before / Feelings I just can't ignore / Don't know if I should fight or fly / But I don't mind."
my hair
Now we are in the most comfortable zone of a relationship. For example, now Ari is employing her iconic whistle tones and getting so comfortable she’s ready to let her man run his hands through her prized, and sacred ponytail. “It's been way long overdue / Just like these inches down my back / Usually don't let people touch it / But tonight, you get a pass.”
nasty
Yuh yuh, this is the natural point in any relationship where all you want to do is spend time with your boo… and by "spend time" we mean to stay in bed forever. “Get all the homies to bounce / Switch from the bed to the couch / And get to know how I'm feelin' inside / So much conversation, words so sweet / Been so well-behaved, but, boy, I'm weak / Yeah, my body's gotta say something to you.”
west side
This is the heaviest R&B moment on the album and if this track doesn’t exude seduction we don’t know what does. Ariana does need to hold her love back or the perfect runs she serves us throughout the song. “I don't want it if it ain't your touch / It's better every time we chill / You ain't gotta bring no stuff / We got all we need right here / Just let me be in your life like that / Be your wife like that.”
love language
First of all, this song is a bop, second of all AG’s love language is all about learning from her partner… she’s “unlearning what ain’t right.” “Baby, pardon my French, but could you speak in tongues? / Never lost in translation 'cause you know what I want, boy.”
positions
The track that sent us into the hottest era of Ariana in motion… we’ll be forever grateful. The line, “Boy, I'm tryna meet your mama on a Sunday / Then make a lotta love on a Monday,” is already historic.
obvious
We are here for all of AG’s “dirty truths.” Grande sings about her loyalty and lets us know she’s right where she wants to be right now. “Others that I've had had to impress me before / But I knew you were the real thing / When you walked through the door.”
pov
The final finish that has us feeling pretty emotional. When Ariana belts “I want to love me / the way that you love me,” is stark, but damn does it hit hard.
