Proposal to put COVID-19 memorial in New York City park sees pushback

Debate continues over where a COVID-19 pandemic memorial should go in New York City, with one proposal facing pushback from residents in lower Manhattan.

Battery Park City is among the locations considered in Manhattan, but some community board members say there are already enough memorials and monuments in the area.

The Battery Park City Authority discussed plans in January about having an essential workers park located in Rockefeller Park. It would include 17 trees, each representing a different essential worker group.

But the community board disagrees, saying the memorial should be placed in an area of the city harder hit by COVID-19.

Shelia, a Rockland County resident who was visiting the neighborhood on Saturday, said that she would come to the memorial if it were there.

“I think that it's a beautiful place, and I think that even if there are other memorials, this is a huge part of our history now and it's a very historic issue,” she said.

“I think this is a central place,” she said. “I think this is a perfect place.”

Stan has been living in the Battery Park area for 26 years and said there is certainly room for a COVID memorial among the other memorials and monuments.

“It’s a central spot. There will be people who will need to come here. There will be people who appreciate it here, I’m sure of that,” he said.

Neither the Battery Park City Authority nor the community board has returned a request for comment.
