Shepard joined host Jay Shetty for an in-depth conversation on the On Purpose podcast as he touched on coming to peace with his past experiences and how they helped shape his identity today. “We don’t ever feel like we’re enough,” Shepard says. As someone who has struggled with addiction in the past, and has been open about a recent relapse, Shepard then spoke on how getting sober yielded benefits he could never imagine.

“The other thing I think that happened in my life which is significant is that I joined a 12-step program 18 years ago to get sober,” he said. “I got a ton of practice talking about my shortcomings, my failures, my fears. It’s a unique experience because it was met always with understanding, no judgment, compassion, [and] unity. I don’t know how you could get those hours of practice without that.”

Shepard then credited the program with helping him be confident with his own identity. “That program helped me just be me and not be terribly worried about that,” he said.
