Mark Morton and Willie Adler let their dual guitar attack do the talking in the opening measures of the first new music from Lamb of God in five years.

The axemen are all over the neck, biding their time, until the pounding rhythm section and growling vocals of Randy Blythe make the return complete on “Checkmate.” The song is the first preview of Lamb of God’s forthcoming self-titled album, due out May 8th.

“‘Checkmate’ brings together all the components of the Lamb of God sound that we’ve been developing over the last two decades, but with the ambition and ferocity that comes with the start of a new chapter for our band,” Morton said in a statement. “Re-energized and reignited, this is Lamb of God 2020. We’ve never been more excited.”

“Putting only our name on it is a statement,” Blythe said. “This is Lamb of God. Here and now.”

The band says the album was written before and after their tour with Slayer. The LP features special guests Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed and Chuck Billy of Testament.
