James Harden finished second in the NBA's MVP race for the third time in five seasons after Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo was announced as the winner at Monday's award show in Burbank, CA.

Both players finished 1-2 on every ballot, with Antetokounmpo earning 78-of-101 first place votes for 941 points, while Harden garnered 23 first place votes and 776 points. Both player were annoucned as unanimous first team All NBA selections last month.


Harden was trying to become the third active player to win back-to-back MVPs and the 14th player to win the award multiple times. He won his second straight scoring title, averaging 36.1 points per game, the seventh highest scoring average in NBA history. 

Antetokounmpo averaged 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game on a Bucks team that finished with the best record in the NBA.

Oklahoma City's Paul George, Denver's Nikola Jokic, and Golden State's Stephen Curry rounded out the top five.
