Hey friends, Glenn here!
I had the chance to see Pretty Woman: The Musical at Connor Palace last night.
You know, the movie starring Julie Roberts and Richard Gere that came out in 1990?
I'm a sucker for rom-com movies, and this was one of my favorites. Steph and I will always stop and watch it when it's on TV. So, we both jumped at the chance to see in on-stage.
Speaking of seeing something on stage, Playhouse Square has relaxed their mask policy. They are now optional, and no vaccine card is required for entry. It felt weird at first being there unmasked, but it also felt oddly normal, and I like that feeling. There were plenty of sanitizer stations and things are still cashless, so if you're hesitant, don't be.
Ok, back to the show. I liked it. I didn't love it, but I really liked it. It pretty much follows the story line of the movie with the characters singing a lot of their feelings at the end of each scene. Sometimes I forget that a musical means there is going to be a lot of singing, and it's strange to see Edward and Vivian singing to each other, since he was so business-oriented in the movie, but it didn't interfere too much.
My major critique of the musical, was the..umm..music. It was strangely generic. The original soundtrack is so epic (Roxette, Go West, Peter Cetera)..None of those songs are featured. Sure The Roy Orbison original makes an appearance at the end, but I found a lot of the songs forgettable.
The story itself and the actors are all great. The costumes and flow of the show are on-point and made me like the show a lot.
Would it be a big mistake if you didn't see it? Yes. Just pop in your Pretty Woman soundtrack in the car before and after the show.
Pretty Woman: The Musical runs through March 27th at Connor Palace. Get tickets and info HERE
