Instead of needing coins to park at meter, drivers can now use the ParkMobile phone app to pay for street parking in some parts of downtown Cleveland.

The long-awaited debut of Cleveland’s smart parking system went into effect on Monday, marking the beginning of a rollout period in which street parking spots across the city will convert from coin-only machines to smart parking.

For now, the coin-only machines are still in place, and drivers can continue using coin payments are. If you want to use the new system, you can do so by downloading the ParkMobile app and linking it with a credit or debit card. The meters will have a bright green sticker with instructions and a QR code to pay via your phone. . Users input their license plate and the parking zone they are in, and how long they want to park. Cleveland’s parking enforcement team will ensure people have paid by checking license plate numbers.

The coin-only meters will be removed and replaced next spring and will be able to accept coins, cards, and other payment options. Hourly parking prices have gone up, but this increase was expected as part of the new parking system. The city is using dynamic pricing, so rates are intended to change, based upon demand and location.
