Harold Faltermeyer - "Axel F" | Beverly Hills Cop | 1984
When the '80s calls, this is its ringtone. Harold Faltermeyer's "Axel F" has one of the most recognizable synthesizer parts of all time. It's also one of the very first things that people walking past an unattended keyboard decide to play... It's either "Axel F," or "They Hate This" by Dr. Peter Venkman, of course.
Cyndi Lauper - "Good Enough" | The Goonies | 1985
Cyndi Lauper had some wild friends back in the day. Not only does she get to hang with the actual Goonies in her music video for "Good Enough" which is featured in the beloved 1985 classic, she's also got WWE (WWF at the time) wrestlers Rowdy Roddy Piper, Captain Lou Albano, Nikolai Volkoff, The Iron Sheik, and more in this video for some reason. Totally '80s!
Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger" | Rocky III | 1982
Here's a fun fact: Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" was apparently recorded at the request of the film franchise's star, writer, and director Sylvester Stallone, after Queen denied him permission to use their track "Another One Bites the Dust."
Ice T - "Colors" | Colors | 1988
This 1988 Dennis Hopper-helmed flick starring Sean Penn and Robert Duvall, centers on the late-'80s gang violence between the Bloods and Crips that gripped South Central Los Angeles, Echo Park, Westlake, and East L.A. Ice-T was featured on the Hip Hop-heavy soundtrack alongside Marley Marl, Erik B. & Rakim, Rick James, and more.
Gerard McMann - "Cry Little Sister" | The Lost Boys | 1987
Sure, The Doors need an honorable mention for the perfect inclusion of their track "People Are Strange" in this coming-of-age vampire flick set in the seedy underworld of Santa Carla, CA -- but Gerard McCann's dark and brooding "Cry Little Sister" has become one of those "Oh wow" tracks for music lovers over the years.
John Parr - "St. Elmo's Fire" | St. Elmo's Fire | 1985
The title-track from the beloved "Brat Pack" flick following seven friends' lives after college graduation, John Parr's "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" was a massive hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and surfacing in a number of films, TV shows, and commercials.
Real Life - "Send Me An Angel" | Rad | 1986
Cru Jones (Bill Allen) and Christian Hollings (Lori Loughlin) get down in their famous "bicycle boogie" scene to this '80s synthpop cult classic from Real Life. The entire Helltrack competition never fully recovered after this.
Kenny Loggins - "Danger Zone" | Top Gun | 1986
"Take me to bed or lose me forever!" Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" may have been Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Goose's (Anthony Edwards) go-to bar sing-along, but it was Kenny Loggins' ride into the "Danger Zone" that kicks the tires and lights the fires!
