In case you missed it, Post Malone dropped a cover of Hootie & The Blowfish’s hit 1995 single “Only Wanna Be with You” ahead of his performance at the 25th Anniversary of Pokémon virtual concert on Saturday, February 27.
It’s a truly bizarre combination of individuals and brands that few saw coming, but it works. Now, Darius Rucker has weighed in with his opinion on the cover. He loves it.
“The smile in my face will not leave for a long time,” he tweeted. “This is awesome. My bro @PostMalone bringing it. Hell yes man!!!!!!!!!”
Rucker elaborated on his thoughts in an interview with Variety. “It’s awesome to see that a song we wrote almost 30 years ago continues to resonate as it really speaks to the lasting life a song can have when people connect with it,” he said.
“I love seeing someone like Post put his own spin on it like he does with everything he records.”
Apparently the two artists are friends IRL as Rucker raved about Post’s creativity. “He always has a fresh way to say things. I love that he changed ‘the Dolphins make me cry’ to ‘the Cowboys’!”
