CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A year of social distancing has impacted families in three ways:
Grandparents can't see their grandchildren. Families put off plans to travel. Parents would like some time to themselves.
Now that older people are fully vaccinated, they are raring to travel and see their grandkids. A new travel trend allows them to do both at the same time.
Travel agents say they are booking multi-generational trips where grandparents take their grandchildren on an adventures.
It's a chance for the parents to get time to themselves.
"With parents being home and kids e-learning, it's this opportunity to visit and then allow the parents to stay home and have some privacy while the grandparents travel with the children," Angie Rice, co-founder of Boutique Travel Advisors in Scottdale, Arizona, said Thursday.
She told the WBBM Noon Business Hour that she has booked multi-generational trips that range from Disney cruises to a Harry Potter-themed trip to England.
"The grandparents took the kids to the Harry Potter Amusement Park while the parents had a nice day off in London," Rice said.
“Gramping” has also been referred to as “skip-gen,” as in skipping one generation in the family.
