1. Family of slain North Hall teacher urges prosecutors to drop charges against teens in fatal prank incident

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The family of Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School, is calling for all criminal charges to be dropped against five teenagers involved in the incident that led to his death late Friday night.

Hughes was struck and killed when he tripped on wet ground and fell into the roadway outside his Gainesville home as the group fled after toilet-papering his yard, part of a traditional "junior-senior wars" prank. The 18-year-old driver, Jayden Ryan Wallace, faces first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass and littering charges. The other four 18-year-olds face misdemeanor criminal trespass and littering.

In statements to media outlets including the New York Times and local stations, Hughes' wife Laura, also a teacher at North Hall, and the family described the event as a "terrible tragedy" and "freak accident." They said Hughes knew the students were coming, was excited to catch them in the act rather than confront them, and would not have wanted the teens' lives ruined over the mishap. The family emphasized their support for dropping charges to honor Hughes' dedication to mentoring young people and to prevent further hardship.

A memorial continues to grow outside the high school, with students and the community mourning the beloved educator.

2. Falcons agree to sign former Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa to one-year deal

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons are signing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a one-year contract at the veteran minimum, multiple reports confirmed Monday, shortly after the Miami Dolphins released him.

The move comes as Miami absorbed a record $99 million dead cap hit to part ways with Tagovailoa, who was set to earn $54 million guaranteed this year. For the Falcons, the low-cost addition provides a proven starter (when healthy) to compete with or mentor second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who is recovering from injury.

Tagovailoa, 28, returns to the site of his famous college "2nd-and-26" play against Alabama. The signing is seen as a low-risk way to add veteran experience to Atlanta's quarterback room amid uncertainty.

3. Heavy construction begins on $4.16 billion Georgia 400 express lanes project

ATLANTA — Commuters on Georgia 400 (SR 400) should prepare for disruptions as the state's largest transportation project ramps up with heavy construction starting this week.

The $4.16 billion (some estimates up to $4.6 billion) public-private partnership will add tolled express lanes along a 16-mile stretch from the North Springs MARTA station in Fulton County to near McFarland Parkway in Forsyth County. The goal is to reduce chronic congestion and crashes in one of metro Atlanta's busiest corridors, with toll revenues funding construction and long-term maintenance.

Initial tree clearing has wrapped up; lane closures and other impacts are now underway. Completion is targeted for 2031 at the earliest, meaning years of potential traffic headaches for daily users.
