Eminem’s latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), has just accomplished an amazing feat, claiming the title of the number one album in the country and dethroning Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department after a 12-week reign atop the charts.

While Eminem's 11th album to top the Billboard Albums chart was met with mixed reviews, it didn’t stop people from listening. As reported by Billboard, The Death of Slim Shady debuted with 281,000 units in the U.S. in the week ending July 18. The record debuted with 220 million streams and another 114,000 digital downloads, making its way to the top of the Billboard 200, and earning the biggest sales week for a Rap album in 2024.

This latest achievement now sees Eminem tied with Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, and Ye (formerly Kanye West) for the fifth-most number one's on the Billboard 200. Ahead of them are The Beatles, with a record 19 number one's, JAY-Z and Taylor Swift, with 14 each, and Drake with 13.

The Death of Slim Shady’s impressive chart-topping debut, beating out TTPD, is something new albums from Zach Bryan, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, and Charli XCX were unable to do since Swift’s album first released in April.

While it no doubt remains the best-selling album of the year so far, with about 4.66 million units sold through the first half of 2024, and more physical sales than the rest of the top-10 physical releases of 2024 combined per Luminate, TTPD has now been bumped to the number four spot, its first time below number one since its debut, while K-Pop group Enhypen’s Romance: Untold debuted at No. 2, and Zach Bryan’s Great American Bar Scene falling to No. 3.

To better understand the logistics — the Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.
