The Buford Wolves are off to a great start with two dominating wins over national opponents in which they held both Thompson (AL) and Mallard Creek (NC) to just seven points, while averaging 47 ppg in the two wins. The Wolves will get ready for North Cobb this Friday, a team they faced the last two seasons, splitting that series.

After nearly winning it all last season, the Langston Hughes Panthers are seemingly right back on track to find their way back into the Georgia High School Association Class 6A title game. After a 31 point win in their season opener against Spartanburg (SC), the Panthers were in control the entire way of their 47-21 victory over McEachern this past Friday night.
Hughes will look to go “1-0” this week when they face the Mays Raiders.

After picking up a season opening win over one of middle Georgia’s top programs in Northside, Warner Robins, the Jones County Greyhounds ground the Dacula Falcons with a 35-14 win. Next up for the Hounds will be Perry on Friday and with a win, it will be the first 3-0 start for Jones County since the 2019 season, in which they advanced to the GHSA 5A semifinals.

Class 4A
After getting the season started with a dominating 45-0 performance against Jenkins, the defending GHSA 4A champs, Benedictine, hit a snag this past Friday when they fell to Columbus (FL) 41-15. The Cadets found themselves struggling offensively against the Explorers, but do not let that be an indication as to resilient of a team Benedictine is. The Cadets lost to the Explorers in their opener last season and then fell to Beaufort (SC), but when then win 13 straight and claim the 2021 state title. The Cadets will look to rebound when they host Westminster this week.

Not to take away from any of the other classifications, but this is a classification in which every team ranked could very well be standing on the mountain top by season’s end. However, in order for any of them to do so, the road must still travel through Ellenwood as the two time defending 3A champs, the Cedar Grove Saints come in at the No. 1 position. The Saints were off this past week due to scheduling conflicts with their opponent, Edison out of Florida but will be back in action this Friday when they take on the Westlake Lions.

The defending GHSA 2A champs, the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes, have yet to skip a beat as their 57-6 win over Turner County made them winners of eight in a row dating back to last season. The Purple Hurricanes showed just how dominating they can be as last week’s match up was essentially over by halftime as they led 50-0 at the break. This week, Fitzgerald will travel to Macon to take on Northeast, another middle Georgia top program.

Class A Division I
Similar to Class 3A, 1A Division 1 is another truly competitive classification as several teams have either won state titles or ended their season as runner-ups over the past several seasons. Prince Avenue Christian, the 2020 1A Private champs, had this past week off, opened their season two weeks ago with a 39-3 win over Hammond (SC) and will be back in action this week when they face rival Athens Academy.

Class A Division II
Several of these GHSA Class A Division II teams found them selves as contenders for a state title last season as they made deep playoff runs.
Although losing in the second round of the playoffs last year, the Schely County Wildcats had two runs of five game win streaks last season and opened up the 2022 campaign with a 28-21 win over a tough Tattnall Square Academy.
This week, the Wildcats will take on No. 10 Early County.
