Eminem’s 12th studio album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) has officially arrived, and with it, the “conceptual” death of his alter-ego.

The 19-track project, featuring previously released singles “Houdini,” and “Toby,” featuring fellow Detroit rappers Big Sean and BabyTron, includes some throwback callbacks with a skit titled “Guess Who’s Back,” which is just one of three interlude-like tracks. As well as the track “Guilty Conscience 2,” the follow-up to his Dr. Dre-assisted single “Guilty Conscious” from 1999’s The Slim Shady LP.

Teasing his plans to make his “career disappear” for weeks, Eminem has spent the lead up to his album’s arrival brutalizing and dismantling Slim Shady.

In the “Tobey” music video, he quite literally dismembered his infamous alter ego with a chainsaw. While his other shots at Slim were less gruesome, they still packed a punch. In April, the rapper began to drive the final nail into his alter ego’s coffin by releasing a spoof style clip of IRL crime show Unsolved Mysteries, called Detroit Murder Files. Then in May, he published a faux obituary in the Detroit Free Press.

The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) marks Eminem’s first full-length release since 2020’s Music to Be Murdered By. On it not only does he internally battle with the Slim Shady part of himself, but Em also uses his lyrical prowess to take shots at Diddy and Ja Rule, make fun of Kanye West, make comments about Lizzo, list off all the white rappers that he has inspired, and then some.

Taking to social to announce the album’s arrival, Eminem wrote, “Public service announcement: the ‘death of slim shady’ is a conceptual album, therefore, if you listen to songs out of order they might not make sense. Enjoy.”
