Georgia is putting lottery dollars toward education, DeKalb County students are getting a quieter ride to school, and a voluntary food recall is affecting products containing jalapeños.
The Georgia Lottery’s Powerball jackpot reached $905 million Tuesday night. Since the lottery began in 1993, it has generated more than $31 billion for education in Georgia, helping send about 2 million students to college and another 2 million children to pre-K programs.
Recent legislative changes also mean eligible students entering college this month can receive full tuition coverage through the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarship programs.
Meanwhile, DeKalb County students are getting a much quieter ride to school. The district received about $30 million from the Environmental Protection Agency to purchase 75 electric school buses.
The buses, which are manufactured in Fort Valley, Georgia, are popular for their quiet operation and smoother ride. Drivers also say the electric buses have a tighter turning radius, which can make navigating neighborhood streets easier.
There is also a food recall that could affect shoppers across Georgia.
Taylor Farms is voluntarily recalling some products containing jalapeños because of concerns about possible salmonella contamination. The recalled products include items such as guacamole, pico de gallo and taco dip.
