The Padres lost to the Cardinals 2-1 in Thursday's series opener, in a game that was close throughout the affair. San Diego jumped out to an early lead on an accidental swing from Xander Bogaerts that fell in for a hit down the right field line, allowing Manny Machado to score in the 1st inning. Michael King was terrific allowing just one hit in six innings of work, a solo home run to Alec Burleson in the 4th inning, which tied the game at 1. Masyn Winn's RBI-triple in the 7th inning put the Cardinals back on top 2-1. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the bottom of the 7th inning with an infield single, before attempting to steal second base to be in scoring position. Tatis was ruled out, and Craig Stammen chose to challenge the call on the field. The replays seemed to show that Tatis was safe, but the MLB replay center stuck with the call on the field, ending an opportunity for the Padres to push across the tying run. That was the Padres' best opportunity to score after falling behind, and the Cardinals held on for the 2-1 win. Griffin Canning will start for the Padres on Friday.
