The Padres earned a tough 3-2 win over the Pirates on Friday evening at Petco Park. Nick Pivetta notched another quality start, striking out 8 hitters while walking none and allowing just 2 runs in 6 innings of work. Manny Machado scored from second base on Jackson Merrill's single to shortstop that got away from Isiah Kiner-Falefa and rolled into the outfield, allowing Machado to come around and score. The Pirates scored both of their runs in the 6th inning to take a 2-1 lead on RBI-singles from Bryan Reynolds and Spencer Horwitz. The Padres responded immediately in the bottom of the frame. After drawing a walk, Fernando Tatis attempted to steal second base, and Luis Arraez ripped a double down the left field line, allowing Tatis to score from first to tie the game. With the infield drawn in, Jackson Merrill hit a grounder to second baseman Adam Frazier, who bobbled the ball before firing home, allowing Luis Arraez to slide in head first just in time to avoid the tag. Things got dangerous for the Padres in the 8th inning with Jason Adam on the mound. After retiring the first two hitters, Adam allowed a double to Andrew McCutchen, followed by two walks to load the bases with the score 3-2. Robert Suarez was brought in to attempt a 4-out save, and with a full count against Henry Davis, threw what appeared to be ball four, but Suarez got a favorable called strike three to strand the bases loaded. Suarez pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning to earn his 18th save of the season.
