Padres drop NLDS Game 1 in unfortunate way...

The Padres lost a hard-fought NLDS Game 1 to the Brewers, in a game that will be remembered for something most baseball fans and players have never seen before. The Padres trailed 3-2 with a runner on base in the top of the 9th inning, when Ty France hit what looked to be a 2-run go-ahead home run, but was hit so high that it hit a cable attached to the roof at American Family Field, changed trajectory and ricocheted straight down and was caught at the warning track by Jackson Chourio for the second out of the inning. The stadium's ground rules say that if a ball is hit in fair territory and strikes the roof or anything attached to it, that the ball is live. What looked almost definitely like a score-flipping home run ended up being a fly out.

The Padres had plenty of other opportunities however. They got to Jacob Misiorowski, fouling off over 30 pitches of his and driving up his pitch count early. They scored two runs in the 2nd inning on an RBI-single from Luis Campusano and a fielder's choice hit by Jake Cronenworth to first baseman Jake Bauers, who threw home to try and save a run, but Ethan Salas dove home and scored. The Padres weren't able to hold that lead, as Jackson Chourio hit a game-tying two-run homer off of Robbie Ray in the 3rd inning. William Contreras hit a go-ahead solo homer off of Adrian Morejon in the 7th inning to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead, as all of their run production came from home runs, something they didn't do a lot of in the regular season. Despite the poor luck on France's potential home run, the Padres will lament the fact that they went 1-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners on base. Michael King will square off against Logan Henderson in Game 2 on Sunday.
