The Padres have hired Mike Shildt as their new manager, succeeding Bob Melvin after he left to manage the Giants. Shildt has been in the Padres' organization in a player development role since January of 2022, after being let go by the Cardinals. Shildt managed the Cardinals for three and a half seasons (including the pandemic-shortened season) and led them to a record of 252-199, for a .559 winning percentage.

Padres President of Baseball Operations and General Manager AJ Preller released the following statement on the hiring of Mike Shildt:

“Mike is a proven winner as a manager at the Major League level, and he brings over two decades of experience in professional baseball to the position,” said Preller. “In his time here, Mike has displayed a strong baseball intellect, a passion for teaching the game, and has established relationships with players and staff at both the minor and Major League levels. We believe that Mike is the right person to lead the Padres forward in our continued pursuit of a World Series championship.”
