The Padres avoided losing on a late-game collapse for the second night in a row thanks to a come-from-behind victory that was punctuated by Fernando Tatis' 2-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th. Dylan Cease cruised through the first 6 innings of the game, allowing just one run on a leadoff homer by Zach Neto. Cease struck out 10 hitters with an astounding 25 whiffs, and exited the game with 2 outs in the 7th inning after walking Luis Rengifo. Jeremiah Estrada entered the game, and surrendered a game-tying RBI-double to Jo Adell, followed by a go-ahead 2-run homer to Matthew Lugo, and just like that, the Angels had a 4-2 lead.
The Grit Squad didn't have any quit in them though. Gavin Sheets drove in Tatis on a bloop single just over the shortstop Zach Neto's head, and then Manny Machado scored from third base on a wild pitch to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th. After Jason Adam pitched a scoreless 9th, Elias Diaz drew a leadoff walk, and then Tatis sent the Friar Faithful home happy with an absolute no-doubt-about-it 2-run homer to center, his first career walk-off home run. The rubber match will be Wednesday evening at 6:40.
