The Padres lost a hard-fought game against the Phillies on Wednesday afternoon. Cristopher Sanchez brought his streak of 44 consecutive scoreless innings into the matchup, and he didn't allow a run through the first six innings of the game. Walker Buehler was nearly as good, allowing just one run through six innings of work in what turned out to be a pitcher's duel. The Padres finally got to Sanchez however, as Jackson Merrill tied the game with an RBI-single in the 7th inning. The tie game didn't last very long however, as Jason Adam served up two solo home runs in the bottom of the 7th, one to JT Realmuto and another to Kyle Schwarber. With the Phillies on top 3-1, the Padres finally got a shot at a different pitcher with Sanchez out of the game. After Samad Taylor grounded out to begin the inning against Brad Keller, Fernando Tatis Jr. singled to center, and then advanced to third base on Miguel Andujar's single. With runners on the corners and just one out, Manny Machado struck out. Gavin Sheets then drew a walk to load the bases for Xander Bogaerts, who was hit by a pitch, bringing in a run to make it a 3-2 game. Ty France then hit a grounder to second base to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect 9th inning to secure the win for the Phillies. San Diego will try to avoid being swept on Thursday morning when they send Lucas Giolito to the mound.
