Mostly sunny for Friday as eyes turn to likely Gulf storms

Weather Forecast August 21

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Friday afternoon will see mostly sunny skies with a chance for scattered storms in the Austin area, but all eyes are turning to the Gulf of Mexico where not just one, but two hurricanes may be threatening the Gulf coast by next week.

Partly cloudy skies will give way to lots of sun and highs around 100 Friday afternoon. A stray chance for scattered showers could take the edge off temperatures this afternoon, mainly along and east of Interstate 35.

Lows will fall into the mid 70s Friday night with a chance for scattered showers continuing.

All eyes are turning to the Gulf of Mexico, where two hurricanes are likely to be threatening the U.S. coast next week. What had been Tropical Depression 13 intensified into Tropical Storm Laura Friday morning near the Lesser Antilles. The current forecast track potentially has the storm making landfall as a hurricane near the Florida panhandle Wednesday.

More importantly for the Texas coast, Tropical Depression 14, which is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Marco, is forecast to move into the south-central Gulf by Sunday after crossing over Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. An early forecast track has the storm making landfall as a hurricane somewhere along the Texas or Louisiana coasts.
