WIMBERLEY, Texas (Talk1370.com) -- The man who led Hays County Sheriff's deputies and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper on a pursuit Thursday afternoon before exchanging gunfire has died from his injuries, officials announced Friday morning.
The Hays County Sheriff's Office says 43-year old Nathan Harrington was pronounced deceased late Thursday at a local hospital by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Beth Smith.
According to officials, the incident began around 4:40 p.m. when deputies responded to the Wimberley Exxon in the 14000 block of Ranch Road 12 for a possible suicidal subject. Later, deputies learned that Harrington had stolen a vehicle and was heading north on Ranch Road 12 towards Dripping Springs.
Deputies and the DPS trooper caught up with Harrington and began a pursuit, turning east on FM 150. The vehicle was stopped with a pursuit immobilization technique, at which point Harrington attempted to flee and began firing at the deputies and the trooper. The officers returned fire, hitting Harrington.
One of the deputies suffered non-life threatening injuries to his leg and arms, which were sustained during the immobilization maneuver.
According to Hays County officials, Harrington had an extensive criminal history including multiple felony drug arrests, evading, and weapons arrests.
A joint investigation by the Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers will be conducted, officials said.
