Waivers for expired vehicle registrations, driver licenses to end in April

AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Temporary waivers for expired vehicle registrations, titles, and driver's licenses in Texas will end in April, officials announced Tuesday.

The waivers, which Gov. Greg Abbott announced in March at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, will come to an end on April 14.

Among the items covered by the waivers:

  • Driver's licenses
  • Commercial driver's licenses
  • Commercial learner's permits
  • Identification cards
  • Election identification certificates
  • Initial vehicle registrations
  • Vehicle registration renewals
  • Vehicle titling
  • Renewal of permanent disabled parking placards
  • 30-day temporary permits

Officials say many of the renewals can be completed online, at www.Texas.gov.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said several of its driver license offices across the state will be extending hours beginning January 4 to help with the backlog of needed renewals. Appointments can be made online.

According to Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles shows more than 300,000 vehicles in Travis County with expired registration stickers. Elfant urges drivers to renew their registrations online. "Since it’s unlikely we would be able to process the large backlog of registration renewals within the 60-day renewal period at the tax office, we strongly encourage vehicle owners to consider choosing an alternative method for registration renewal," Elfant said.

Vehicle registrations can also be renewed at area H-E-B or Fiesta Mart grocery stores, Travis County AAA stores, Oak Hill Title Company, and Fry’s Title Service.
