After nearly three decades of serving Southern soul food to the Manor Road community, Hoover’s Cooking will officially close its doors on Monday, May 31.
Owner and namesake Hoover Alexander announced his retirement Thursday, marking the end of an era for the East Austin institution. Alexander, a celebrated figure in the local culinary scene, cited a desire to "transition" after 27 years of operation.
"After much praying and pondering, I know the time for me to transition is now," Alexander said in an official statement. "I'm grateful for the love and support of the greater Austin community for Hoover's on Manor Road."
While the daily restaurant service ends on the final day of May, the space will not go dark immediately. Starting in June, the restaurant will pivot to hosting private events and limited-capacity service for approximately two weeks.
The farewell tour will culminate in a final community celebration scheduled for June 15.
Alexander emphasized that while the restaurant is closing, his involvement in the Austin community is far from over. "Transition doesn't mean I'm over and done with," he noted. "I will continue to be a part of serving and being a 'place holder' in our community. Please stay tuned!"
Details regarding the final celebration on June 15 are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
